The red velvet cake for Sahana. A very unsuccessful red velvet at that, I must say. Forgot to take a photo of the inside layers(!), but this is a small prototype cake I made for home (eggless, for mom).

The frosting always gets messed up.

Delhi, October (Looking west)

There was this poem I’d memorised as a child (I was very whimsical back then, and besides, I lived in Shillong where stars were always in abundant supply, on the non-rainy/cloudy days, that is). It went like this:

“Star light, star bright,

The first star I see tonight,

I wish I may, I might,

Have the wish I wish tonight”

So I started staring at stars more often than usual, taking careful note of which star I’d seen first (not always easy), and well, wishing upon them. I can’t remember exactly what I’d wish for, but I can guess it ranged from the yet unfulfilled wish for a puppy, to the exact name of the Famous Five book I wanted next. Those always got fulfilled thanks to my ever-indulgent mother.

When we moved to Delhi, the whimsy wore off (sigh), and besides there weren’t many stars to stare at in this city, even though it meant the first-star-spotting was easier. Cut to the dSLR-totting days, and it wasn’t up till two days ago that I discovered what exactly could be done with the longer-than-fractions-of-a-second exposures on my camera. Yeah, roll your eyes all you want, but I can now light paint AND photograph stars I can’t even see with my naked eyes (my eyes suck anyway, so I dunno about that). The problem is, I still don’t have a tripod and I literally did not breathe for 30 seconds while taking this photograph.

In any case, I’m doing this again tonight because its Amavasya night. Apparently if I look east, Venus is very bright and so is Jupiter. Whee.

Also, I have got to cut down on my captions.

Advaita at IHC, New Delhi, 23rd September for its 8th birthday gig.

I had never heard (of) Advaita until Sahana invited me to their gig on Sunday evening. I have to say, I was floored the moment the first sound wave hit me, and it’s no surprise that “Dust”, the first song they played that evening is my current favourite. Of course, it’s hard to call any one song a favourite because EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD. I know for a fact that my friend’s favourite is Mo Funk, telling by the number of times she screamed “I hope they play Mo Funk” ~~in my ears~~. Obviously, I was very glad when they finally played it, second to last, or she would have gone crazy :P (Just kidding, I owe you one, HB) For me, every song they played was a revelation…a very enjoyable journey indeed! I can’t wait to get my hands on the first album (they only had CD’s of the second album)! Currently The Silent Sea is playing on loop on every device I own that could possibly play music.

PS: Do go through the lovely album art, the reason why I love buying CD’s!

The Harry Potter inspired dinner.

Butterbeer: A resounding hit, I was asked to prepare some post-midnight in a half-asleep but very giggly state. Unfortunately had run out of ingredients so had to wait till morning. Having shared the recipe, I’m told this shall be consumed ALL day long.

Shepherd’s Pie: Turned out better than I expected. Made real mashed potatoes for the first time ever, and went easy on the cheddar cheese layer on top, but very delicious nevertheless.

Cornish Pasty: Also dubbed as “Baked Kachori” and mistook for “Samosa”. In spirit the same, admittedly, but very different in preparation and taste.

Rock Cakes: Managed to burn second batch, very Hagrid-style. But what else can be expected from someone who calls herself “kepperofthekeys” huh, huh?

Treacle Tart: Was very apprehensive about sticking to original sickly sweet recipe. Several changes were made, some forced, some unforced. Golden Syrup+Black Molasses=Good old Indian jaggery, a eureka! realisation after a lot of internet research. Kept it less sweet than it’s supposed to be and more sour (too much sugar makes me sick, having puked at the age of four, all over the birthday cake of a neighbour). A recipe of “apple treacle tart” found by chance finally converted the Treacle Tart to an Apple Treacle Tart. True words uttered while tasting it: “Good choice Harry!”

All the dishes were (eggy) vegetarian (sob, if only Krits was there), and despite that, were surprisingly yummy. Also, had made each one of them for the first time, kudos to Sahana for being a such trooper, an excellent friend, and a new found fan of my “culinary skills”.

A person (probably very famous and eminent but I can’t recall his name or face right now) once said about Sahana that her “movements are as quick and graceful as that of a deer”. In fact, people always seem to marvel at how fast and quick and lithe she is. Personally, as a photographer I’m always a little overwhelmed and dazzled at her shows, not knowing when to click…what to click. I could blame my equipment (or lack thereof) for my pathetic photographs but let it be a praise of Sahana that photographs just cannot capture the magic she creates on the stage. :)

I’m just really happy because now I finally have a picture of her in one of her jumps. *pats self on back* *thanks lady luck*
